All the rivers of India are often polluted and small rivers are standing on the verge of losing their existence. Due to excessive exploitation of ground water, availability and quality of ground water has become a major problem today. The efforts of water management in India started with independence.
When India was free, then there was a state of hunger because there was a shortage of foodgrains, so soon after independence, the government decided that large dams should be constructed for water conservation and use in agriculture. Those dams gave us freedom from hunger, but today water crisis has emerged a big problem. The main reason for this crisis is that our development policy, water policy and urbanization are largely responsible.
